Juz `Amma `Ilm to `Amal Series

Bismillah,

I was inspired by 1st Ethical’s commitment to making Islam practical and practised by young Muslims. So in that vain, I added a section in the Arabic studies workbooks where we as a class brainstorm ways in which to use the Surah in our lives to become better believers.

The task is for them to do one activity per surah and present it to the class. It can be a craft activity, reflection, poster, a poem and the list goes on….

Here are the activity sheets I made, selected some students to complete them and present to the class:

Surah at-Takweer

Surah al-Ghashiyah

More will be added as they are made.

Hope you find these useful insha Allah!

Surah al-Bayyinah Dominoes game

Juzz Amma Dominoes Game Series

Bismillah,

We’re all familiar with dominoes so I thought why not use them to create a keyword review game. These will be printed on good quality thick paper and then laminated – the school will appreciate the extra work so we don’t have to make them annually!

So this game is for the dominoe game Surah al Bayyinah to help review the vocabulary in a fun way. I’ll store them in a clear plastic sealable bag.

Surah Keywords Lolly sticks Game

Bismillah,

A quick activity to review keywords found in a Surah. I think it’ll be nice for them to play this game in pairs and compete with each other iA. To store them I’m using clear plastic bags which can be bought in bulk of course.

What you need:

  1. Jumbo craft lolly sticks
  2. Sticky labels
  3. Coloured Pen (markers) and normal pen

Instructions:

  • Write the keywords you want on the sticky labels first – you get better handwriting that way!
  • On the first lollypop stick write START using a marker (can also stick a label with START written on it).
  • On the same stick, use your first keyword
  • On the next stick stick the meaning of the first keyword and on and on until you get to the FINISH.

Juzz `Amma Folding Craft Activity

Bismillah,

One fun way of teaching the Surah order of Juzz `Amma is to create this Accordion folding stick craft activity – what a mouthful! 🙂 I came across this activity as a Butterfly activity and it has many versions such as the Father’s Day one. Here is the link to the  Bible craft version on Danielle’s Place of Crafts and Activities as it has excellent pictures that explain how to make it.

There are two ways of making this activity: If you want to hang it, you can attach a ribbon to the top into a loophole or leave the ribbon and use it to tie it together. Also, the Surah order can be either from Surah Naba to Surah al-Nas or the other way around.

Version 1:

Version 2:

What you will need:

  1. Jumbo Craft sticks:  For my class I needed 10 for each student so I had to buy them in bulk from Amazon.
  2. The Juzz `Amma surah list pdf
  3. Coloured card strips
  4. Ribbon

For copyright reasons, I don’t think I can include even the instructions – so If you want to make this Accordion folding please head over to the Danielle’s place of Craft and Activities site.

For my class: I have cut the card into strips that fit into the jumbo size I need. If you want to avoid cutting strips because it is a time consuming thing, you can buy colored jumbo lollipop sticks. I have added stickers to jazz it up as well!

Hope you enjoy creating this activity with your class!

Surah al-Gashiyyah crossword

Bismillah,

Similiar to the other keyword assesment sheets I’ve created, my year 9 class will also be assessed using a crossword. The keywords will then be reviewed using flashcards for that particular surah.

Surah Al-Bayyinah crossword quiz

Bismillah,

The test set for this week for the students learning Surah al-Bayyinah this term was to memorize the keywords from the surah. So I thought, rather than making a straightforward vocabulary test where they input the correct Arabic/English keyword, why not give them an Arabic-English crossword to solve. I can always test their knowledge of keywords in other ways, such as by using flashcards.

Qur’anic Arabic translation activity

Bismillah,

One of the goals of Al Barakah Arabic department is to help students with the ability to translate the surahs found in Juzz `Amma by themselves. This is done through the teaching of keywords/vocabulary found in the surah and simple grammar points that can be found within a specific surah. The children also learn the Tafsir – themes and context of the Surah. I think it’s a great way for non-native Arabic speaking children to connect with the Qur’an and the curriculum is fantastic! (Not because I designed the advance Arabic textbooks but because the organisers are so passionate that only Qur’anic Arabic is taught – any other kind of Arabic can be learnt any where else).

So here is a translation worksheet  I’ve designed to informally test how much of the previously learnt keywords they have retained and to pass along the translation techniques I myself picked up at Oxford.

Attached pronouns

Bismillah,

The students have previously learnt the concept of attached pronouns in Arabic. I have to make sure that they have understood the concept and can add the attached pronouns to the noun correctly. Since this is Qur’anic Arabic, I have chosen two keywords from Surah al-`Alaq that a simple to use.

Here’s the attached pronoun practise worksheet:
