Arabic Verbs matching game

Bismillah,

Here is an activity I created and used with my 3 classes. It was a good way of helping the girls review the verb list I handed out to them. Check this post out to get your hands on the pdf of a list of verbs oft-used in the Qur’an.

Here is a picture of one of the works by a team who managed to put it all together and presented the game in their own creative way 🙂

ap1

Preparation:

I printed the sheets out in colour and laminated each sheet. I then cut out each image (apples) leaving a thin white border around it. Then, I cut each apples in half. I stored each set of verbs in mini ziploc bags.

How I used this resource:

I then asked the girls to place a tick around the verbs they were already familiar with on the page (cover the English to see which ones they could translate without looking).  I then handed out the resources which was played in pairs. Mashallah, the girls got on very well.

Benefits of pair-work:

Students love working together and helping each other. Pair up students who are different abilities to allow them to teach each other and learn not only the material but soft skills too e.g. patience, politeness. The benefits will show up as better class cohesion and healthy competition.

I will laminate this sheet and it will be a pair activity. You will also need dice and counters for this game.

Arabic Past and Present Tense Fill in the Blank worksheet

Bismillah,

Here is an activity that I was meaning to create for a while now to use in my teaching. A nice way to show and review the prefixes and suffixes attached to the core verb root to conjugate it for different subject pronouns.

I’m going to print this document double sided so I end up with only one sheet for each student. Then I’ll laminate the sheet so the students can fill in the blank using a dry erase whiteboard marker.

Here is the pdf of Arabic tenses Fill in the Blank activity sheet.

Arabic Present Tense jigsaw set

Bismillah,

Here is a jigsaw type activity that I have put together to help the girls review Arabic present tense conjugation parts.  To help them see the different parts that make up present tense for each subject pronoun.

Laminate the sheets and store in a sealed bag and re-use as needed. I’m going to make this a pair activity so I will only need half the number I would’ve needed.

Arabic verb roots activity

Bismillah,

The latest grammar rule I introduced to the Year 8s was the Arabic verb root system. Telling them that if they learnt this correctly, they would know 50% of Arabic seemed to do the trick. For me to have even gotten their attention after teaching them 6 grammar rules already was a massive deal. But Allah made things easy for me alhamdolillah!

I introduced the 3 Arabic verb roots as 3 roots of a tree. The fruit the tree has are the words that can be made out of the three roots. Obviously, it will take many more lessons to even get 50% of the class to grasp this weird and wonderful language concept.

Here is an activity I created to help the girls grasp an idea that we talked about related to the Arabic verb system: words are created using the three root letters and additional letters.

Definite article review

Bismillah,

Now that it has been agreed that there will be no use of social media symbols in the textbooks, I am free to publish activities which were included in the books. Apart from that I cannot publish other activities I have included in the books as I signed away the copyright. We aim to make the books available in the UK market in 2016 bi’ithnillah. I’m so excited for that moment as Muslim schools across London are waiting for Al Barakah school to sell such a product. I am deeply grateful to Allah for choosing me to work on it. Ya rabb keep my niyyah pure and accept this from me. Ameen.

It was interesting to see that the older girls didn’t bat an eyelid when they first saw such activities in the books. It was only the 12 year olds (year 8) who were surprised by it. It would be interesting to see what causes that change and in such a short space of time.

The following activities may not be to everyone’s taste/beliefs but teachers up and down the country use such materials in schools so I thought why not for Qur’anic Arabic.

Surah `Abasa `Ilm to `Amal series

Bismillah,

My year 10s have now moved on to Surah `Abasa masha Allah. We have so far covered the following:

  • Grammar points: The definite article, detached pronouns, attached pronouns, demonstrative pronouns and prepositions.

In the last lesson, we covered the recitation and brief Tafsir of Surah `Abasa. The students have been given the research of this Surah’s tafsir as h/w as well as to complete one action point.

They can choose one from the following:

Early Years Arabic: The Bingo Bismillah game

Bismillah,

Bingo Game

Laminate the sheets with letters (start with sheets with foll form and then work your way to the broken letters and end up with joint letters). The teacher calls out a letter and they find it and circle it on their sheets using whiteboard pens which can then be wiped and reused. At the end the class shouts out “Bingo Bismillah” together 🙂
